"Rooted" Original Painting

This painting was inspired by the process of nutrient cycling that occurs when salmon return to their natal forest streams to spawn, then die. In their adult lives, salmon absorb essential nutrients from the ocean that are rare in terrestrial ecosystems. When they die in forest streams, their bodies decompose – “fertilizing” the forest. With this painting, I wanted to honor the salmon that return year after year to nourish our magical forests, highlight the important role they play as a nutritional foundation to our beloved trees and charismatic megafauna, and offer my reverence to the intricate and intimate webs that keep us all interconnected.
