This painting is inspired by the beauty of new beginnings, second chances, reparation, and renewal. Elk, like most members of the deer family, naturally shed and regrow their antlers each year, embodying the idea that change and rebirth are an essential part of life. This natural cycle became the foundation for “New Life,” a painting that emerged through its own long, winding process of creation, destruction, and repair. In the same way elk renew themselves with each season, we are continually recreating ourselves: shedding old layers, healing from past struggles, and growing into something new. My hope is that this piece serves as a reminder to trust the vital cycles of renewal in this natural world that we are part of — and to be gentle with ourselves and others as we navigate the “imperfections” that ultimately push us to be greater.
